Pilates for Cancer Recovery: Supporting the Body’s Healing Journey

Cancer treatment is a life-altering journey that profoundly impacts the body and mind. From chemotherapy and radiation to surgeries, each step is a battle toward healing. For individuals in recovery, Pilates can be a gentle, supportive approach to reclaiming strength, improving flexibility, and rebuilding emotional well-being. Contrary to the idea that Pilates is always intense or vigorous, it’s also an approach focused on balance, control, and harmony—a perfect fit for supporting the body in its post-treatment journey.

Private sessions with LDV Pilates offer a safe, supportive environment where every movement is customized to help my clients reconnect with their bodies at their own pace. For those fighting cancer or in post-treatment recovery, I design tailored sessions that respect each individual’s unique needs, promoting energy flow, encouraging gentle strength, and supporting a sense of empowerment and healing. Here’s how Pilates can support recovery from specific types of cancer.

How Pilates Can Support Recovery from Common Types of Cancer

Each type of cancer has its own impact on the body, and different treatment protocols require specialized recovery strategies. This is why I carefully consider your unique recovery needs, adjusting each movement to be as supportive and effective as possible. Here are examples of common types of cancer and how I can adapt Pilates practices to aid recovery:

Breast Cancer

For clients recovering from breast cancer, particularly after surgeries like a mastectomy or lymph node removal, it’s common to experience reduced range of motion, weakness, and tightness in the chest, shoulders, and arms. In these cases, we will focus on gentle chest-opening stretches, shoulder mobility exercises, and gradual strength building. Movements like scapular retractions and arm circles with minimal resistance can help restore range of motion, rebuild strength, and alleviate scar tissue tightness. Breathing exercises inspired by Qi Gong help manage energy flow, reduce tension, and enhance relaxation, complementing the physical recovery process.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer treatment often affects respiratory capacity, making breath-focused exercises essential for recovery. Pilates emphasizes diaphragmatic breathing, which can help rebuild lung capacity, strengthen respiratory muscles, and improve overall stamina. Gentle exercises such as spine mobility work (e.g., chest lifts and gentle thoracic extensions) are beneficial in increasing chest expansion and lung capacity. In addition, we will focus on low-impact core exercises that promote strength without overwhelming the respiratory system, providing a holistic approach that aids both physical recovery and mental relaxation.

Colorectal Cancer

For clients who have undergone colorectal cancer treatments, abdominal surgery or digestive sensitivities may impact core strength and lower back stability. Here, Pilates can be especially beneficial in helping to restore a balanced core. Movements like pelvic tilts, bridging, and gentle core stabilization exercises build strength without straining the abdomen, providing a strong foundation for everyday movement. A gradual progression in core engagement ensures that abdominal muscles are strengthened over time, without overtaxing the body during recovery.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer treatments can lead to issues with balance, core stability, and pelvic floor function. Pilates is well-suited to address these areas through controlled movements that strengthen the core and pelvic floor. Exercises like modified leg lifts and pelvic floor engagement help clients improve stability and regain core strength. Incorporating TCM principles such as mindful breathing techniques can enhance energy flow, reduce stress, and help manage the fatigue that often follows cancer treatment.

Liver Cancer

Liver cancer recovery often includes challenges with fatigue, energy regulation, and reduced muscular endurance. Pilates exercises that focus on gradual strength-building and gentle stretching are helpful in maintaining balance and boosting circulation. Movements such as gentle spinal rotations, leg slides, and hip mobility exercises encourage blood flow and muscle engagement while respecting the body’s limited energy levels. With a blend of movement and breathwork, clients can enjoy a supportive, low-stress approach to rebuilding strength and maintaining energy.

Integrating TCM Principles for Energy and Healing

As a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I often incorporate elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles into sessions, such as those from Qi Gong, to support energy flow and healing. Qi Gong-inspired breathing exercises, for example, help regulate the body’s energy, enhance relaxation, and calm the nervous system—beneficial for those in recovery from the physical and emotional toll of cancer treatment. This holistic approach goes beyond muscles and joints, focusing on balancing Qi (life energy) and promoting harmony within the body, which complements the slow and intentional movements of Pilates.

A Typical Pilates Session for Cancer Recovery

LDV Pilates Studio - A welcoming space for all

Walking into LDV Pilates, you’re welcomed into a peaceful, private studio environment where your well-being and comfort are paramount. Here, you’ll find a nurturing atmosphere with a focus on one-on-one attention, allowing us to understand your unique recovery goals. Each session begins with a conversation about how your body feels, any areas of discomfort, and your goals for recovery.

Example Session Breakdown:

Warm-Up

We start with gentle, full-body stretches and breathing exercises to connect with your body, release tension, and prepare for movement. These initial movements are slow and mindful, allowing you to ease into the session and awaken the muscles without overstressing them.

Tailored Movement Series

After warming up, we move into exercises that address your specific recovery needs. For breast cancer survivors, for instance, we may include chest-opening stretches and shoulder mobility exercises. Lung cancer survivors may focus more on breath expansion and lung capacity exercises. Regardless of the specific movements, each is chosen and adapted to respect your body’s current state and gradually build strength and flexibility.

Restorative Cool-Down

The session concludes with calming stretches and relaxation techniques designed to restore balance and leave you feeling refreshed and grounded. With gentle guidance, we promote a sense of inner calm and relaxation, helping your body and mind to reconnect in a positive, supportive way.

Your Safe Space to Heal and Thrive
